Removing Team Members
When someone leaves your team or no longer needs access to LiteWork, you can remove them from your organization. Removal is immediate and can’t be undone—they’d need a new invitation to regain access.
Who Can Remove Members
- Owners — Can remove anyone except themselves
- Admins — Can remove other Admins, Members, and Viewers
- Members and Viewers — Cannot remove anyone
You cannot remove yourself. If you’re the Owner and want to leave, you must transfer ownership first.
How to Remove Someone
- Go to LiteWork Settings → Team
- Find the person in the Active Members list
- Click Remove next to their name
- Confirm the removal
Their access is revoked immediately. They’ll be signed out of LiteWork on their next action.
What Happens When You Remove Someone
For the Removed Person
- They lose access to all companies in your organization
- They can no longer view invoices, quotes, or contacts
- Their active sessions are invalidated
- They receive an email notification about the removal
For Your Organization
- Their team member slot is freed up
- Documents they created remain in place
- Contacts they added remain in place
- No data is deleted
Removing Someone with Another Account
If the person you removed has their own LiteWork organization (or belongs to other organizations), those are completely unaffected. They only lose access to your organization.
Can They Be Re-Added?
Yes. If you need to give them access again:
- Go to LiteWork Settings → Team
- Click Invite Member
- Enter their email address
- They’ll receive a new invitation
They’ll need to accept the invitation again, but their LiteWork account (if they have one) remains intact.
Removing the Owner
The organization Owner cannot be removed. Every organization must have exactly one Owner. To change the Owner:
- The current Owner must transfer ownership to someone else
- After transfer, the former Owner becomes an Admin
- Now the new Owner (or an Admin) can remove the former Owner if needed
Removing Yourself
You cannot remove yourself from an organization. Instead:
- If you’re the Owner — Transfer ownership first, then ask to be removed
- If you’re not the Owner — Ask an Admin or the Owner to remove you
Alternatively, you can simply stop using the organization. Your access remains but you’re not obligated to use it.
Before Removing Someone
Consider:
- Do they need view-only access? — Change their role to Viewer instead of removing
- Is this temporary? — Removing and re-inviting requires them to accept again
- Have you communicated? — They’ll get an email, but a heads-up is courteous
Removing Team Members to Downgrade
If you’re downgrading to a plan with fewer team members:
- Identify who needs to be removed
- Remove them from LiteWork Settings → Team
- Once within the new plan’s limit, you can downgrade
For example, downgrading from Team (5 members) to Solo (1 member) requires removing 4 team members first.
Troubleshooting
“Cannot remove this member”
- You might not have permission (only Owners and Admins can remove)
- You might be trying to remove yourself
- You might be trying to remove the Owner
Removed person still has access
Their session may be cached. Ask them to refresh or sign out. Access will be blocked on their next request to the server.
