Transferring Ownership
Every LiteWork organization has exactly one Owner—the person with full control over billing, subscription, and the organization itself. If you need to change who that person is, you can transfer ownership to another team member.
When to Transfer Ownership
Common reasons to transfer ownership:
- Leaving the company — You’re moving on and someone else should manage LiteWork
- Changing roles — Someone else is taking over financial responsibilities
- Business sale — The business is being sold or transferred to new owners
- Restructuring — Billing should move to a different person or department
Before You Transfer
Make sure:
- The new owner is already a team member — They must be in your organization before you can transfer
- They understand the responsibility — The new Owner controls billing and can delete the organization
- You’re ready to give up control — After transfer, you become an Admin and lose billing access
Ownership transfer cannot be undone by you. After transferring, only the new Owner can transfer it back.
How to Transfer Ownership
- Go to LiteWork Settings → Team
- Find the person you want to make Owner
- Click Transfer Ownership (or select from their role dropdown)
- Confirm the transfer
Both you and the new Owner will receive email notifications about the change.
What Happens When You Transfer
For You (Former Owner)
- Your role changes to Admin
- You lose access to billing settings
- You can no longer delete the organization
- You keep all other Admin permissions
For the New Owner
- They gain full Owner permissions
- They can now access billing and subscription
- They can delete the organization
- They can transfer ownership again if needed
For the Organization
- No data changes
- Subscription continues unchanged
- Team members keep their roles
- Companies and documents are unaffected
Who Can Receive Ownership
Any current team member can become the Owner, regardless of their current role:
- Admins
- Members
- Viewers
You cannot transfer ownership to someone who isn’t already in your organization. Invite them first, wait for them to accept, then transfer.
Ownership and Billing
The Owner is responsible for the subscription:
- Payment method stays the same after transfer (unless the new Owner changes it)
- The new Owner can update payment details
- Billing invoices will be addressed to the new Owner’s billing details
If the new Owner wants to use their own payment method, they should update it in LiteWork Settings → Billing → Manage Billing after the transfer.
If You Can’t Transfer
No other team members
You need at least one other person in the organization to transfer to. Invite someone first.
Person hasn’t accepted their invitation
Pending invitations can’t receive ownership. Wait for them to accept, then transfer.
Technical issues
Contact support@litework.nz if you’re unable to transfer ownership due to a technical problem.
After the Transfer
As the new Admin (former Owner), you can:
- Continue using LiteWork normally
- Manage team members
- Connect and manage Xero
- Create and manage companies
The only things you can’t do anymore are manage billing and delete the organization.
Getting Ownership Back
If you need ownership returned to you:
- Ask the current Owner to transfer it back
- They follow the same transfer process
- You become Owner again
There’s no way to reclaim ownership without the current Owner’s cooperation. If the Owner is unresponsive, contact support@litework.nz.
